National Hospital Week

Did you know that the BCHM hospital is governed by five community members? Our board of directors are elected to their positions by the citizens of Bates County.

Each board member serves a five-year term and can be re-elected for additional terms. They are unpaid public servants working for our hospital and community.

We are grateful for their dedication, their hours of work and training, and the difficult decisions they are routinely asked to make to ensure our health care stays local for the long term.

During #NationalHospitalWeek we recognize and thank this very special group: Linda Jennings, Mike Taranto, Jerry Jones, Rick King and Jim Shade.

Nancy Wilson (left) has been a custodian in the district for 29 years and is looking forward to spending time with her kids and grandkids.

Sheila Smalley (center) has taught science in the district for the last 5 years, capping off a 26 year career.

Along with cake and punch, staff treated the retirees with an award of appreciation, cards, and gifts. If you see these ladies, thank them for so many years of service to the Rich Hill community!

Adrian Optimist Club: Miami R-1 Students of the month for April and May

The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard, and Adrian schools. Criteria for this honor center on outstanding academic and civic achievement and school spirit. Staff at each of the schools make the selection, and their decision is based on expansion of these criteria.

Selection is based on the criteria, but a student stepping up to a particular task will come to play in it. Each student is honored with a certificate of recognition from the Adrian Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks.”

April Student of the Month for Miami is junior Brennah Filtingberger. She is the daughter of Rob and Lisa Filtingberger Brennah’s activities in school include volleyball, NHS, FFA and A+ program while her outside activities include club volleyball and after school tutoring. She believes, “That Time Flies.” She plans to attend MCC and play volleyball.

School staff states that the reason for selection is Brennah is the student we are proud to have represent Miami. She is a top student in her class, in National Honor Society, involved in extracurricular activities, and willing to step up and help students. She tutors elementary students after school. She is kind, helpful, and respectful to staff and peers. A true Miami Eagle representative.

Miami R-1 School District May Student of the Month is Katie Downs, daughter of Molly and Eric Downs. Katie is a junior who is involved in volleyball, basketball, FFA, and NHS. She stays busy at work when not at school. She states her mom encourages her to work hard in school. She plans to attend college but has not decided on a major.

Staff says: “Katie is an example for what we look for in a Miami Eagle. She is a straight A student and takes her education seriously.

She holds a job outside of school but doesn’t let that interfere with getting quality work done on time. She is respectful to staff and peers and encourages others to keep on task and get work completed. She shares insights in classes that lead to deeper understanding for others. She looks out for her younger siblings. She represents our school in positive manner and we are proud of her.”

Rich Hill School Teacher Spotlight:

MEET MRS. COX
Dr. Kevin T. Goddard
May 10, 2024

Mrs. Tonya Cox says she has "lived everywhere" but she considers Rich Hill her "hometown."

This is Mrs. Cox's 21st year of teaching. She earned her Masters Degree in Career and Technical Education from UCM. Besides teaching, Mrs. Cox owns a food trailer and has worked in food service or education since she was 12.

Married to Dallas, they have two daughters. Bailey is an Agriculture Education major at UCM; and Ashley is a 6th grader at Butler. Her hobbies include traveling and food.

As an alum, Mrs. Cox knows that Rich Hill school cares about kids and the community is "super supportive" of the school and children. Besides her husband and children, Mrs. Cox is especially proud of her school "kids." She loves running into them years later and listening to stories of how the learning from her classes has helped them in life after high school.

Mrs. Cox wants to share, "Knowledge is power and comes from multiple sources. Help us (the school) educate the kids everyday and in multiple ways."

I must admit, I'm a foodie too and my office being across the hall from Mrs. Cox's FACS class is not good for my waistline!

State Farm Student Athlete of the week

We are excited to announce our last Athlete of the Week of this school year. As part of being a Good Neighbor, Athlete of the Week allows us to give recognition to the hard working athletes in the area. We have had another great year of recognizing many great athletes!

Congratulations to Tandee Hiser for being selected as this weeks Athlete of the Week! Tandee was nominated by Coach Courter who stated, "on Monday, April 29, Tandee broke both the school and Ozark Highlands Conference record in the pole vault with a vault of 3.75 meters (12’ 3.75"). As of May 2, this mark leads not just Missouri Class 2, but all classes in the state as well as being the highest freshman girls vault in the country. This also qualifies her for the Nike Outdoor Nationals to be held in June in Eugene, Oregon.”

About Tandee:
Tandee is a freshman at Butler High School. She is involved in volleyball and track. We asked Tandee what she believes it takes to become an elite athlete. She told us, "a lot of time and dedication. You must put in a lot of practice and spend time outside of the regular practice hours." The most influential person in Tandee’s track career is her brother, Jaxon Hiser. She explains how she looks up to him in pole vault and he teachers her a lot about the sport.
•Favorite sport: track or volleyball
•Goal for pole vault: beat the class 2 state record
•What keeps her motivated for pole vault: continuing to get higher heights and beating her personal records.
•Favorite sonic drink: cherry limeade

Our team here at Kellie Davidson State Farm wants to wish Tandee the best of luck as she competes at sectionals tomorrow!
